EN8 is an unalloyed medium carbon steel which is used in applications where better properties than mild steel are required but where the costs do not justify the purchase of a steel alloy. EN8 can be heat treated to provide a good surface hardness and moderate wear resistance by flame or induction hardening processes.

EN8 carbon steel is a common medium carbon and medium tensile steel, with improved strength over mild steel, through-hardening medium carbon steel. EN8 carbon steel is also readily machinable in any condition. EN8 steels are generally used in the as supplied untreated condition.

En8 and 080M40 steel mechanical properties are listed in the following tables including yield strength (yield stress), ultimate tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity, young’s modulus, etc.

EN8 (080M40) offers superior tensile strength when compared to normal bright mild steel which is achieved during the thermo mechanical rolling process. Extra strength can also be achieved by heat treatment – EN8 can be flame or induction hardened but is normally supplied in the untreated or normalised condition.
