The final development at Erma is known as the EMP 36. This can be considered an intermediate model between the EMP and the MP38. Although many details of the mechanism were changed from the EMP, it retained Vollmer's telescoping main operating spring basically unchanged.

The Erma Maschinenpistole 36, commonly known by the abbreviation of EMP 36, is an experimental submachine gun developed by Erma Werke, based off of their earlier submachine gun designs. The firearm was produced in limited numbers as a prototype, and was quickly succeeded by the improved Maschinenpistole 38 .
