The MP58 was a West German prototype submachine gun designed by ERMA Werke. After the Bundeswehr's rejection of the MP57, Erma received funding and assistance from the Federal Ministry of Defense to design a new, cheaper submachine gun.

The Federal Ministry of Defense collaborated with Erma in 1958 to produce a new prototype that would meet the Bundeswehr’s requirements. The resultant weapon was known as the MP58. It bore a superficial resemblance to the MP-40 and was made from sheet steel stampings. It had a telescoping return spring and a folding wireframe stock.

The resulting gun was known as the EMP or Erma Maschinen-Pistole. The weapon's most distinctive outward feature was its vertical foregrip, but its greatest innovation was the use of a telescopic housing for the mainspring.
