Maj Michael Somerton-Rayner developed the Esarco 8x8 and 6x6 vehicles on his own initiative in the 1980s. It came after military leaders identified the need for a lightweight, high-mobility load carriage in the wake of shortcomings identified during the 1982 Falklands conflict.

The Esarco eight wheel drive vehicle was developed in the early 1980's by Major Michael Somerton-Rayner. The first Esarco was based on standard Land Rover 110 engine, transmission and axles. Eight wheel drive with the front and rear axles steering in opposite directions made for a light footprint with a tight turning circle.
