Onegin is considered a classic of Russian literature, and its eponymous protagonist has served as the model for a number of Russian literary heroes (so-called superfluous men). It was published in serial form between 1825 and 1832. The first complete edition was published in 1833, and the currently accepted version is based on the 1837 publication.

Eugene Onegin is a well-known example of lyric opera, to which Tchaikovsky added music of a dramatic nature. The story concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman's love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend. The opera was first performed in Moscow in 1879.

Eugene Onegin is a man in his mid-20s living in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the early part of the 19th century. His story is told by an unnamed narrator, a well-educated acquaintance of Eugene’s who sometimes diverges from Eugene’s story to reflect on the love affairs of his own youth.
