NY 440 splits off from the Staten Island Expressway (I-278) and runs south as the West Shore Expressway. The first exit is exit 8, which is for South Avenue.

CONNECTING THE STATEN ISLAND EXPRESSWAY WITH THE SOUTH SHORE: The West Shore Expressway connects the Staten Island Expressway (I-278) with the Korean War Veterans Parkway and the Outerbridge Crossing approaches, and provides the only north-south express route that extends the length of the island.

The new exit ramps are planned to line up with the main entrance of the College of Staten Island, just east of the original right-of-way of the Willowbrook Parkway. According to the NYSDOT, the Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Expressway carries approximately 20,000 vehicles per day (AADT).
