Our ARS F/2 Nutrient Solution is a highly concentrated, single-part liquid formulation based on the widely renowned Guillard F/2 medium, which has been a cornerstone in microalgae culturing for decades.

f/2 Medium (Guillard and Ryther 1962, Guillard 1975) This is a common and widely used general enriched seawater medium designed for growing coastal marine algae, especially diatoms. The concentration of the original formulation, termed "f Medium" (Guillard and Ryther 1962), has been reduced by half.

Another synthetic media (f/2 medium) was used for the cultivation of diatom (Navicula incerta) to maximize cell density (87 × 10 5 cells/mL) at 20°C and salinity (33 %) (Kang et al., 2011)....

UTEX sells F/2 Medium at 1X concentration only. Stock solutions and individual components for this specific medium are currently not available for purchase. To approximately 950 mL of non-pasteurized seawater (30 ppt), add each of the components in the order specified (except vitamins) while stirring continuously.

Add all the f/2 components aseptically to your media once it has cooled to room temperature. For other algal groups (e.g. dinoflagellates, coccolithophores) use f/2-Si medium (prepare as for f/2 medium but omit Na 2 SiO 3 .9H2O).

Make final volume up to 1 L with filtered seawater (or artificial seawater) and adjust to pH 8 using 1N HCl or 1N NaOH. Autoclave. If seawater is not available, use artificial seawater as in ESAW.
