The Mitsubishi F-2 is a multirole fighter derived from the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, and manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Lockheed Martin for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, with a 60/40 split in manufacturing between Japan and the United States.

It was developed from the F-16 Fighting Falcon of General Dynamics and first flew in October 1995. The aircraft was introduced in 2000 and was produced from 1996 until 2011. A total of 98 aircraft were built including four prototypes. The F-2A is a single-seat fighter version while the F2-B is a two-seat trainer version.

In 1987, the JASDF selected a variant of the F-16C as the Japanese FS-X aircraft to replace the Mitsubishi F-1 aircraft, and in 1988 Mitsubishi was selected as prime contractor for the aircraft, which became known as the F-2.
