The performance of the Corsair was superior to most of its contemporaries. The F4U-1 was considerably faster than the Grumman F6F Hellcat and only 13 mph (21 km/h) slower than the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. All three were powered by the R-2800.

Powered by a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp 18-cylinder engine producing over 2000 horsepower, the Corsair could not only fly faster than 400 miles per hour, she was the first US single engine fighter to do so. It was not just fast, but also incredibly deadly, armed with six .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns.

2021年7月17日 · On a test flight on October 1, 1940, the prototype XF4U-1 flew at 404 m.p.h. making the Corsair the first U.S. single-engine airplane to exceed 400 m.p.h. in level flight. The F4U was in production longer than any other World War II piston engine fighter. Production began in 1941 and ended in 1953 at the conclusion of the Korean War.

Excluding service in reserve squadrons, the F4U’s operation with the U.S. Navy lasted over 13 years. The seven nations that ultimately flew the bent wing birds employed them in virtually every mission, climate and type of combat possible for a fighter-bomber.

The Museum’s F4U-1A is a WWII Combat Veteran. During Operation Cartwheel in the South Pacific, it was shared among several USMC squadrons – VMF 217, and most likely VMF-213, VMF-214, VMF-215, VMF-216, and others.
