When Santa Fe purchased the F-3 and F-7 passenger diesels, they were extremely fussy about their appearance. This was because President Gurley insisted on it. All of the F-3's were upgraded with F-7 style grilles in 1950 and 1951.

While the railroad used several different models of locomotives to pull these trains, the General Motors Electro-Motive-Division F-7s were the most popular and successful versions.
