The North American FJ-2 and FJ-3 Fury are a series of swept-wing and carrier-capable fighters for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The FJ-2 resulted from an effort to navalize the North American F-86 Sabre operated by the United States Air Force .

The North American FJ-3 Fury is a carrier-capable fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by North American Aviation. It took its first flight in July 1953 and served in the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The aircraft was introduced in 1954 and was retired in September 1962.

The FJ-3 featured a new wing, fuselage, rudder, engine, and landing gear. Furies designated FJ-3M could carry two Sidewinder air-to-air missiles plus the drop tanks. Meanwhile, standard FJ-3 production aircraft had the earlier two wing store points increased to six for carrying bombs up to 1,000 pounds, rocket pods, or additional drop tanks.

The museum's Fury is an FJ-3, one of 538 built at North American's Columbus, Ohio plant. The FJ-3 featured an enlarged air inlet for its Wright engine. FJ-3s were delivered between September 1954 and August 1956.

The next iteration in the Fury series evolution was the FJ-4. It was a major redesign effort that added a new fuselage and wings to the changes previously applied to the FJ-2 and FJ-3.

The Sapphire promised to deliver 28% more thrust than the J47, for little gain in weight. The new version was designated FJ-3, and an order for 389 aircraft was placed in March 1952.

The Fury was given the honor of the first slot in the new system, although by this time most FJ-3s had been retired from service. The FJ-3M was assigned the designation MF-1C, and the drone directors FJ-3D and FJ-3D2 were redesignated DF-1C and DF-1D respectively.
