2023年10月5日 · The history of FLL dates back to the 1920s when it was nothing more than a mere airstrip. Known as Merle Fogg Field, it was named after a local aviator and not, as some might jest, a mysterious fog that occasionally envelops the airport. In its early days, the airport saw more cows grazing on its fields than planes taking off.

The original Merle Fogg Field (Ft Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport) was built over an abandoned nine-hole golf course and opened on May 1, 1929. In 1942 the airport was taken over by the Navy (for pilot training purposes) and was greatly expanded with the construction of new aprons, barracks, hangars and runways.
