Impact Protection for the Driver from the Steering Control System. This Standard applies to MPVs, trucks and buses with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. (4,536 kg) or less. It does not apply to vehicles that conform to the frontal barrier crash requirements of FMVSS 208 by means other than seat belt assemblies. It also does not apply to walk-in vans.

FMVSS 203 applies to passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks and buses with a GVWR of 10,000 lb or less. It does not apply to vehicles with air bags or walk-in vans. Forward control vehicles that do not meet the requirements of FMVSS 203 must have a Type 2 seat belt that conforms to FMVSS 209 installed for the driver.
