The PDP is a newer iteration of the PDB that was in the Kit of Parts given to teams in the 2015 FRC season. The main difference between the two is that the PDP is slightly smaller, lighter, and has updated connectors, which includes the Weidmuller Connectors used on the CAN bus.

Additionally the FRC Control System Components that draw power from PDP may not have reverse battery protection, and can also be damaged in a reverse battery event.

It is only required if you wish to access the current/voltage sensor readings on each channel of the PDP. In order to access the can information two things must happen: You properly connect the PDP to the roboRIO via CAN; You use the appropriate LabView or WPILib PDP CAN libraries to read the sensor values in your robot code.
