Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (FRCS) is a professional qualification to practise as a senior surgeon in Ireland or the United Kingdom.

On passing the JSCFE, you will be awarded the international qualification FRCS (College) and are eligible to apply for election as a fellow to any of the four royal colleges. You will then be entitled to use the colleges’ associated post-nominals FRCS (College). Full details on candidate eligibility can be found on the JSCFE website.

The FRCS exam taken by a specialist trainee, normally in the final two years of Specialty Training, is commonly known as the 'exit exam'. Only trainees that successfully pass the FRCS exam can be awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).

Intercollegiate specialty fellowship examinations are offered by the four royal surgical colleges (England, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ireland). On passing the specialty fellowship examination you can join the RCS as a fellow.

The Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE) is responsible to the four Surgical Royal Colleges of UK & Ireland for the professional conduct and delivery of the Intercollegiate Specialty Examinations (FRCS Specialty).

Success in both JSCFE Section 1 and Section 2 will permit affiliation to one of the four Surgical Royal Colleges of Great Britain and Ireland and, with effect from January 2023, the use of the post-nominal IntFRCS (College) as long as the annual College subscription in maintained.
