Fast and Testimony Meeting. Purpose. Partake of the sacrament and strengthen one another by bearing testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel. Members are encouraged to come to the meeting fasting if they are able to fast. Participants. All are invited to attend. Frequency. Once a month, sacrament meeting is a fast and testimony meeting.

Joseph received this revelation regarding the importance of bearing one’s testimony: “Nevertheless, ye are blessed, for the testimony which ye have borne is recorded in heaven for the angels to look upon; and they rejoice over you, and your sins are forgiven you” (Doctrine & Covenants 62:3).

We should declare our heartfelt testimony in brief and concise statements related to our Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the true restored gospel. What will happen when the congregation sit in the fast and testimony meeting and hear pure testimony of members saying: I know that the Father and the Son appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith.

We are taught that there are three aspects to a proper fast day observance: first, abstaining from food and drink for two consecutive meals or, in other words, 24 hours; second, attending fast and testimony meeting; and third, giving a generous fast offering.

The money donated is called a fast offering. The sacrament meeting on each fast Sunday, called fast and testimony meeting, is devoted to the voluntary expression of testimony by members.

Fasting helps us become more righteous and closer to God (see Isaiah 58:6–11). Fasting and prayer can help us gain a testimony (see Alma 5:46 ). Fasting is a commandment (see Doctrine and Covenants 88:76 ).

In the scriptures I have found at least 49 references to fasting—25 of those link fasting to prayer. Proper fasting magnifies our ability to pray, study, and teach. Principle 5: Fasting prepares us to bear testimony.

Part of a testimony’s development comes when it is shared. In the Church testimony is shared often in fast and testimony meetings, in Church classes, and in conversations with family members and friends.
