The human tail offered early scientists a notion of recapitulation involving phylogeny and ontogeny, or "reversion to a lower species."

Human tail is a curiosity, a cosmetic stigma and presents as an appendage in the lumbosacral region. Six patients of tail in the lumbosacral region are presented here to discuss the spectrum of presentation of human tails. The embryology, pathology and treatment of this entity are discussed along with a brief review of the literature.

Two cases of different types of human tails (caudal appendage) are presented and the differences between these two types, the potential aetiology of these abnormalities, and the literature on the subject reviewed. There is confusion about the entity known as "human tail".

Results: We discovered two important findings: (a) the cause of this anomaly may differ even though the "tails" resemble each other closely in appearance and (b) its position tends to be correlated with the type of anomaly and its associated cause. We propose a new classification of the human tail based on these findings.
