Respirator Filters – how to select the correct filter type | Draeger
Filters are classified according to their capacity (gas filter) or their efficiency (particle filters). The particle filter class indicates how efficiently particles are filtered from the ambient air. Our filter class chart gives you a quick overview.
Respirators are normally defined as filtering Respiratory Protective Devices (which remove contaminants from an otherwise breathable atmosphere). Because of the diversity of applications, there are many different types of respirators in service, ranging from simple disposable filtering facepieces, to fully self-contained breathing apparatus.
For powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs), use a HEPA filter instead of the N, R or P type particle filters listed in the guide. On the bottom row, list the type of filter and/or cartridge that is applicable for ALL of the contaminants together on your form.
This Respirator Filter Selection Guide provides information on the appropriate 3M™ Filters to be used when using 3M Negative Pressure and Powered Air respirators for nearly 700 chemicals. The guide also includes Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) for these

Table 1 gives you a brief overview of the nominal protection factors (NFP) for respiratory protective devices. The NFP is the highest permissible leakage level according to the approval requirements of the respective device. It indicates the mathmetically calculated maximum protection performance.
Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is a particular type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), used to protect the individual wearer against inhalation of hazardous substances in the workplace air.
Depending on the area of application and the length of time workers are required to wear RPE will determine the most appropriate filter. Did you know that a gas filter continues to absorb the hazardous substances from the air even if it is not in use?
Respirators filter the air to remove harmful substances and breathing apparatus (BA) provides clean air for the worker to breathe. This guide will help those who have responsibility for the...
