The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. [2] It is organised by and named after the Football Association (The FA).

The early winners of the competition were all teams of wealthy amateurs from the south of England, [5] but in 1883, Blackburn Olympic became the first team from the north to win the cup, defeating Old Etonians.

The first FA Cup matches ever, four on the same day, were played on 11 November 1871. The first final was played the following spring at the Kennington Oval, in which Wanderers defeated Royal Engineers 1-0.
