Over the years, there have even been new members here that are confused over the terminology of this. They have mistakenly called a ferro rod "flint & steel".

2015年7月13日 · the confusion comes when you talk about using your 5160 to strike a flint. this is commonly called a striker. in this case the sparks are made by pieces of the steel chipping off and sparking after being struck with a flint or chert. in your case, the 5160 needs to be struck on a hard and sharp enough surface to shave off sparks.

It is normal to have pieces chip off your flint, the pressure of the impact with the steel causes it to flake or chip because the flint is fracturing due to impact. Keep trying and be careful!
