The bell size chosen is a typical small to medium size for F tuba and I had to make the tapered branches from sheet brass of course. I was skeptical about its utility, but Jim was very enthusiastic and started using it almost immediately for performances and recordings.

How do you think the FLUBA sound compares with tuba or contrabass trumpet? A Imagine the sound of a great big flugel horn. It is kind of between the sound of an F tuba and a Cimbasso. The sound is directionally forward and it has a very mellow sound. It is a little brighter than a tuba and a little darker than a conta-bass trumpet.

Designed by Robb Stewart, the Fluba is owned by musician Jim Self, who is also a tubist (tuba player). His idea was to have a tuba sized flugel horn, so Robb designed it and made it from parts. The valve section and "guts" are from a Yamaha Eb "compensating" tuba. Robb cut the slides for an F instrument.

Masterminded by renowned tubist and brass enthusiast Jim Self, with the assistance of brass manufacturer Robb Stewart, the Fluba is a captivating blend of a flugelhorn and a tuba. This novel combination creates a low-end brass instrument with a gentler, softer sound than a traditional tuba, perfect for accompanying ballads and solos.

Left: The Fluba: now. The Fluba is what you might expect- a hybrid instrument that is partly Flugelhorn and partly Tuba, invented by Jim Self, who is no relation. Essentially it's a Tuba-sized Flugelhorn. It looks far from balanced, and a difficult thing to hold up.

On the right, he’s performing with his frequent musical partner, jazz guitarist John Chiodini. Jim released 18 studio recordings over the years, featuring works for brass ensemble, jazz duo and solo instrument.

Many feature his own unique instrument, the FLUBA (picture a tuba-sized Flugel Horn). His latest recording is Flying Circus, Music for Brass Quintet, all original music by Jim Self. It features 25 of the top brass players in Los Angeles including 10 members of Pacific Symphony.

The brainchild of legendary tubist and general low-end enthusiast Jim Self (with the help of brass manufacturer Robb Stewart), the Fluba is exactly what you might imagine it is - a hybrid of a flugelhorn and a tuba.
