The Written Exam comprises 36 multiple choice or true/false questions that cover casting mechanics, fly tackle, knots, and teaching. Thirty correct answers are required to pass. The Performance Exam comprises 15 casting demonstration tasks and 7 teaching tasks that are described in the CI Performance Test Evaluation Form .

The CICP Program’s main objectives are to educate and enhance the growth of fly casting instructors by: Establishing high and consistent standards for casting instructors. Administering a test that fairly and consistently assesses the candidate’s knowledge of casting, teaching ability, and casting proficiency.

Prepare fly casting anglers to become Fly Fishers International (FFI) casting instructors (CI). A review of all aspects of the casting and teaching requirements will be provided for taking the exam. Eric Cook, Mack Martin and Tom Rueping are FFI Master certified instructors as well as CICP FFI validated examiners.

To become a Certified Instructor, a candidate must be a member of Fly Fishers International, must pass an extensive written examination and then a demanding practical exam on how to cast, but more importantly, proper fly casting instruction. The exam includes casts for accuracy, special fishing situations, distance and common casting errors.
