The Fokker D.I (company designation M.18) was a development of the D.II fighter. The D.I was also flown in Austro-Hungarian service as a fighter trainer aircraft under the designation B.III . Confusing the matter further, both the D.II and D.I arrived at the Front in German service at similar times, in July–August 1916.

The Fokker D.I was a fighter aircraft from the First World War. Contrary to what the name suggests, the D.I (M.18ZF M.18ZK) was the successor to the D.II (M.17ZF M.17ZK). Both Fokkers entered the service of the German army at the same time, which received the first ninety aircraft around July / August 1916.

In response to the loss of air superiority in late 1917, the Germans organized a competition for new fighter designs held in January 1918. The in-line engine winner was the Fokker D.VII. Fokker received an order for 400 aircraft. To meet the demand for the new fighter, Albatros, Fokker's chief competitor, also built the D.VII under license.
