The Fokker D.II was a German fighter biplane of World War I. It was a single-seat fighter aircraft developed before the Fokker D.I. It was based on the M.17 prototype, with single-bay unstaggered wings and a larger fuselage and shorter span than production D.IIs.

In early December 1916, all Fokker biplanes were withdrawn from service due to structural faults in the aircraft construction. Errors were found during both static testing and operational use. The D.II was equipped with a nine-cylinder Oberursel UI rotary engine of 100 hp and was armed with a single Spandau LMG.8 machine gun.

The Fokker D.I (company designation M.18) was a development of the D.II fighter. The D.I was also flown in Austro-Hungarian service as a fighter trainer aircraft under the designation B.III. Confusing the matter further, both the D.II and D.I arrived at the Front in German service at similar times, in July–August 1916.

This action took place during the famous Allied bombing raid on the German town of Oberndorf where the Mauser rifle factory was situated.

The removed cowling of this Fokker D.II allows a closer look at its 100 hp Oberursel U.I engine, 'Fokker D.D.' translates as "Fokker Biplane". Oddly, it was the Fokker monoplane (E.IV) seen in the background of the photos that was powered by the 160 hp Oberursel U.III instead.
