2014年4月16日 · Cosworth increased its association with Ford in 1969, by developing a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine for road use in the Ford Escort. Working from the Kent block, Cosworth created a 1,601 cc for homologation purposes.

Largely known as 'Cosworth BDA' or 'Ford BDA', BDD and BDM were also very successful in Formula Pacific and Formula Mondial racing in Australia and New Zealand.

Originally conceived by Mike Hall (Cosworth Engineering) as a belt driven version of Cosworth’s FVA power plant, this engine is based on the Ford 1600 X/Flow bottom end. It made its first appearance in the Mk1 Escort in 1970 and replaced the Lotus twin cam engine as the new high performance engine for the Ford Rally Sport models.

BDA, BDD (US version of BDA) 1600cc and BDG 2000cc, fundamentally have the same block and head dimensions. Internal bores, pistons, combustion chamber volumes , valves and tract sizes are primarily where the differences are. There are 15 variants of the original BD (Belt Driven) architecture with power ranging from 100 to 650 horse power.

As Keith Duckworth was busy designing and developing the DFV, the project was assigned to Mike Hall, who created the 1601 cc BDA on the Kent block for homologation purposes.

In 1970, the 1701 cc BDB was created for the Escort RS1600. This engine later received fuel injection for the first time in the series as the 1701cc BDC. Two years later, the BDA series was adopted for Formula 2 and was initially the only engine run by teams.
