The Ford MTX transmission is a 4 or 5-speed manual transaxle used in some of Ford's front-wheel-drive North American passenger cars (Escort, EXP, Tempo, Taurus and their Mercury counterparts) from 1981 to 1994.

Make sure the parking brake is fully set and shift the gearshift lever to the neutral position. Fully depress the clutch pedal then start the engine. Press the brake pedal and shift the gearshift lever to first or reverse gear. Release the parking brake and slowly release the clutch pedal while slowly pressing on the accelerator.

The MTX-75 manual transaxle features the following: The input shaft has 2 tapered roller bearings. Input shaft end play is controlled by a selective shim located under the bearing cup. The output shaft has 2 tapered roller bearings. Output shaft end play is controlled by a selective shim located under the bearing cup.

Using appropriate remover/replacer, install shift lever shaft oil seal. Install shift lever shaft and main shift control shaft block. See Fig. 11. Install retaining bolt and tighten to specification. The MTX-II was a 4 speed manual transaxle introduced in the Ford Escort and Mercury Lynx as a base model "fuel saver" design. The Tempo and Topaz also used this as a base model. It was succeeded by the MTX-III.

What this contains is a listing of all the MTX transmissions, their gear ratios, and the final drive ratios that SHOULD bolt right up and into the 1st gen escorts.
