The 3rd Battalion, 229th Aviation Regiment was originally constituted on 18 March 1964 in the Regular Army as the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion and assigned to the 11th Air Assault Division. It activated on 19 March 1964 at Fort Benning, GA.

It was also announced that the 4th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment would join the brigade and that 1st Battalion, 229th Aviation would move from Fort Hood to JBLM.
