The franc is any of various units of currency. One franc is typically divided into 100 centimes. The name is said to derive from the Latin inscription francorum rex (King of the Franks) used on early French coins and until the 18th century, or from the French franc, meaning "frank" (and "free" in certain contexts, such as coup franc, "free kick").

The Franc is one of the oldest and most widespread currency units in the world, currently the official currency of 25 states or autonomous territories.

The actual currency in France is the Euro with the symbol € and has been since January 1st, 1999. One Euro is made up of 100 cents, or ‘centimes’ in French. (Of note, France is not a cashless society so Euro notes and 50 cents €1 & €2 coins are always very useful.)
