Frothy bloat in ruminants: Cause, occurrence, and mitigation …
2012年2月28日 · Frothy-bloat is caused by entrapment of gas produced from fermentation of readily digestible feeds. Fermentation results in the formation of a stable foam that prevents the release of fermentation gas by eructation.
Three types of bloat can occur in small ruminants: frothy bloat (primary ruminal tympany), free-gas bloat (secondary ruminal tympany) and abomasal bloat (abdominal tympany). Both frothy and free-gas bloat can occur in any animal with a mature rumen, but abomasal bloat is usually only seen in bottle-fed young. Frothy Bloat (Primary Ruminal Tympany)
Frothy Bloat
Bloat is a common gastrointestinal condition in ruminants that is characterized by the accumulation of gas in the rumen and reticulum. Bloat can occur as a frothy or free gas form. Frothy bloat occurs due to rapid consumption of high protein, highly digestible feed, resulting in excess amounts of stable foam in the rumen.
Bloat - Team Forage
The most common type of bloat is frothy bloat where gas builds up in a foam or froth above the rumen contents and the normal belching is inhibited. Observable bloat can occur after as little as 15 minutes of grazing. Often the animal bloats only mildly and stops eating. The discomfort is eventually relieved.
In order to prevent legume-associated frothy bloat in cattle it is important to understand the main characteristics of the disorder, the causes, treatments and preventative strategies that can be implemented for on-farm use. In healthy cattle approximately 30 to 50 liters of gas are produced every hour (Bowen, 1996).

The second type of bloat is frothy bloat, which happens as the result of a stable foam developing on top of the rumen liquid, which blocks the release of the gas. This is by far the most common form of bloat, and unlike gassy bloat, it is highly seasonal with peaks in the spring and autumn.
