In the early 1900s, the Great Central Railway (GCR) constructed large numbers of Class 9H (LNER J10) and Class 9J (LNER J11) 0-6-0 tender locomotives. These caused a downgrading of existing Sacre Class 18 (LNER J8) goods engines.

The Sacre J59 (GCR Class 18T Altered) 0-6-0T Locomotives. The Class 18T was Sacre's standard shunting locomotive design for the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR). A total of 41 were built between 1871 and 1881 in four batches. These were built with open cabs, wooden brake blocks, and wooden buffer planks.

In 1911 Robinson introduced a highly successful design of 2-8-0 locomotives on the Great Central Railway for hauling coal trains to the new docks at Immingham.
