The GE U23B is a 2,250 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation from 1968 to 1977. It was one of the most successful models of the Universal Series, with 481 units built, including 16 exported to Peru. The U23B was replaced by the B23-7.

These were the first U23Bs ever built, and were the only ones with radiator fairings. The U23Bs were factory built with the nose Gyralite signal light. #2312 was repainted as #1776 for the Bicentenary and named “E.W. McCrea.”

Powered by a V12 FDL prime mover, the 2250 h.p. U23B was GE’s intermediate-sized four-axle road-switcher of the late 1960s through the mid 1970s. The U23B’s direct competitor during this period was the very successful EMD GP38.

Conrail inherited 77 units from Penn Central, 12 from Lehigh Valley, and 10 new, assigning them to series CR 2700-2798.
