Available in two barrel lengths – for 400m and 300m range – the GL 40 is designed for low and medium velocity (longer than usual range) rounds.

Firing all types of 40x46mm NATO standard low-velocity grenades, the FN40GL® may be mounted under either rifle using a trigger adapter and dual locking clamp levers, or it may be configured as a stand-alone launcher. Completely ambidextrous, the FN40GL® utilizes a polymer receiver mated to an aluminum barrel for durability and light weight.

The GL 40 is a single shot weapon that fires NATO standard 40x46mm low velocity grenades. Besides high explosive fragmentation rounds there is a wide selection of other types of rounds available. As the barrel opens sideways rounds of any length can be loaded. The effective range against point targets is 150 meters.

The Steyr GL 40 is a 40mm grenade launcher developed and produced by Steyr Mannlicher in Austria; it can be used as either an underslung launcher (mounted on the same company's AUG A3 and STM-556 rifles) or as a standalone weapon. Its barrel pivots to the side for reloading, rather like the Heckler & Koch AG36.
