The F7 was EMD's first cab variant to be produced at its new Canadian subsidiary, General Motors Diesel (GMD) of London, Ontario. In all, GMD sold 127 examples to the Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and the Wabash (for its line in southern Ontario between Detroit and Niagara Falls/Buffalo, New York).

The EMD F7 is a model of 1,500-horsepower (1,100 kW) diesel-electric locomotive produced between February 1949 and December 1953 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (EMD) and General Motors Diesel (GMD).

Built between April 1951 and May 1952, many of the fleet continued in regular revenue service on CP into 1983 and those sold to VIA lasting into the early 1990s.

Well, the GMD London-built F7B and F9B differed from their EMD La Grange-built counterparts and have their own unique attributes. First and foremost, let's clear the air. There is no such thing as an FP7B or an FP9B. That's a misnomer. Whether it had a steam generator or not, it was simply an F7B or an F9B.
