If this file name was /bin/make, then the recipe executed is cd subdir && /bin/make. From the GNU Make manual (page 51): " when GNU make starts (after it has processed any -C options) it sets the variable CURDIR to the pathname of the current working directory." Not the location of where the Makefile is located - although, they might be the same.
