2023年9月13日 · I bought a house last year and the previous owners had some trees planted about 3ft away from the gas line going to the house. I'd like to keep them because they would provide a nice privacy screen, but Im a bit nervous about it. The trees are Dakota pinnacle birch and I'm not sure if the roots will cause problems in the future.

If it's the gas service line the city likely won't have regulations on private utilities but the closest I've seen a city allow a tree to a utility line of any type is 8' with most cities being 10'. That's 10 horizontal feet from center to center.

I will be planting the following trees at these distances from the natural gas line running through my backyard to the house: American Beech - 8 ft. October Glory Red Maple - 6 ft. Northern Red Oak - 12 ft. In my searches on this topic, people are pretty passive about planting near their gas lines. It was installed by PSE&G in the late 90's.
