I'd like to keep them because they would provide a nice privacy screen, but Im a bit nervous about it. The trees are Dakota pinnacle birch and I'm not sure if the roots will cause problems in the future.

If it's the gas service line the city likely won't have regulations on private utilities but the closest I've seen a city allow a tree to a utility line of any type is 8' with most cities being 10'. That's 10 horizontal feet from center to center.
