It's a move designed to distract predators so the gecko can escape. They lose a substantial amount of fat reserve doing so, which is why it's only under extreme circumstances.

If my geckos get cuts or scrapes, what is safe to use to clean the wounds? TCP? Iodine? Antiseptic? Something else? I have a reptile-safe disinfectant that I use to clean the tank with, but there's a world of difference between sterilising an environment and applying something to an open wound. I doubt very much that it would be suitable.

Aug 30, 2018 · Geckos also need something to rub against to loosen the skin and help it come off. In the wild it would probably be a big rock. If your terrarium doesn't have anything like this (all your hides etc. are very smooth) consider getting something. Finally, some geckos just seem to have more difficulty shedding than others!
