This medium-sized gecko is easily identified by the pairs of black spots along its ventral surface, and by the black 'W' at the back of the neck. This nocturnal species occurs in lowland forest, both primary and secondary, as well as rock crevices, old buildings and road culverts.

Singapore as a locality for G. monarchus was first reported by Cantor (1847 a) without any specific details. Following, specimens were reported from different museum collections (Girard 1858 b; M ̧ ller 1878; Boulenger 1885 a) before Flower (1896) expressed that he found it quite common at SBG, and within homes (Flower 1899).
