Gelibolu is a town in Çanakkale Province of the Marmara Region, located in Eastern Thrace in the European part of Turkey. It is located on the southern shore of the peninsula named after it on the Dardanelles strait, 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) away from Lapseki on the other shore. [ 2 ]

Gelibolu takes its name from Greek Καλλίπολις, Kallipolis, "beautiful city". It's midway down the peninsula that bears the same name, at the point where the Sea of Marmara narrows into the 60 km straits of the Dardanelles or Hellespont.

The Sanjak of Gelibolu or Gallipoli (Ottoman Turkish: Sancak-i/Liva-i Gelibolu) was a second-level Ottoman province (sanjak or liva) encompassing the Gallipoli Peninsula and a portion of southern Thrace.

Gelibolu District is a district of the Çanakkale Province of Turkey. Its seat is the town of Gelibolu. [1] Its area is 823 km 2, [2] and its population is 44,598 (2021). [3]

Gelibolu (Gallipoli) Peninsula Historical National Park is known for the First World War cemeteries and memorials for the Turkish and foreign soldiers killed during the Canakkale Sea and shore battles in 1915.

2017年12月19日 · Gelibolu is the largest town on the Gallipoli Peninsula, with the Aegean Sea to the west and the Dardanelles Strait to the east. Because of its strategic location, the peninsula was a silent witness to the long and extremely bloody struggle for the control of the Dardanelles Strait during the First World War.

İyi ve güzel şehir anlamına gelen Galli Polis adıyla anılan Gelibolu’nun tarihte ilk kez Hitit İmparatorluğunun M.Ö. 1200’de parçalanmasından sonra, Frigler ve onları izleyen Lidyalılar’ın Anadolu’ya geçişleri sırasında önem kazandığı görülmektedir.
