Gelonus (Ancient Greek: Γελωνός) [1] was, according to Herodotus, the capital of the Gelonians. In his account of Scythia (Inquiries book 4), Herodotus writes that the Gelonii were formerly Greeks, having settled away from the coastal emporia among the Budini, where they "use a tongue partly Scythian and partly Greek":

The Gelonians (also known as Geloni, Helonians or Heloni[1]) (Ancient Greek: Γελωνοὶ) were an ancient Scythian people whose existence was recorded by ancient Graeco-Roman authors. The location of the Budini near Scythia. The Gelonians lived alongside the Budini in the valley of the Vorskla river. [2]

Gelonians are farmers, cultivated foods, and looking alltogether different than the Budinians. They live in a dense wooded country, with animals whose fur is used to decorate their mantals, and whose testicles are used to treat illness of the womb. Neighbours of the Scythians, their country is wooded and contains a large lake surrounded by marsh.

Gelonus was the son of Herakles and brother of Agathyrsus and Skythes. On his way back to Greece after seizing Geryon 's cattle, Herakles had his horses stolen by a snake-tailed woman (some say she was Ekhidna) who returned his horses only after he had made love to her.

They were originally Hellenes who settled among the Budinis (perhaps a Finnic-Votic tribe ruled by the Scythians) and were bilingual in both Greek and the Scythian language. Their capital was called Gelonus or Helonus, from the Greek word for market town.

Excavations at Bilske Horodyshche (Більське городище) near the village of Bilsk near Poltava in Ukraine have led to suggestions by archaeologist Boris Shramko and others identifying it as the Scythian capital Gelonus. [2]
