GEO 105: Energy Resources in Transition. The increasing impacts of the climate change crisis present us with the urgent challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, requiring an energy transition on a scale humanity has never attempted.

GEO 105 at Stony Brook University (SBU) in Stony Brook, New York. Today we are faced with the challenge of driving the economies of modern civilization with new energy resources. This course looks at the current energy sources to assess their long term sustainability.

Introduces key geographic themes of location, place, region, human-environment interaction, and mobility. Includes an examination of spatial patterns of topics such as population, migration, language, religion, culture, cooperation and conflict, natural resources, and political organization.

Examines environmental processes, human impact on the global environment, diverse perspectives on the contested concept of sustainability, and solutions to environmental problems. Emphasizes social science models, theories and perspectives as frameworks for thinking critically and creatively about a range of sustainability issues. 1.

Weekly labs will cover interdisciplinary environmental topics such as: climate change, earthquakes, fracking, species extinctions, and water resources. Students will use the scientific method to critically evaluate environmental controversies, explore the role of ethics in science, and learn to distinguish science from pseudo-science.

Topics include: solar system, stellar energy, stellar evolution, galaxies, the universe and constellation identification. Three class hours. NOTE: This course meets SUNY General Education Natural Science and (Scientific Reasoning) SUNY-NSCI requirements when both GEO 105 and GEO 115 are successfully completed.

Introduction to earth science using the Great Lakes as a theme and Lake Michigan as a natural laboratory. Review of the lakes' geologic setting, origin, and history; climatology and lake levels; physical processes including erosion; water chemistry as a function of geology; human interactions with the lakes. Lectures and field trips.
