The GER Class R24 was a class of 0-6-0 T steams designed by James Holden for the Great Eastern Railway (GER). They passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the grouping in 1923 and received the LNER classification J67. Some R24s were rebuilt with higher boiler pressure in which form they were similar to the later Class S56.

This photograph shows R24 class shunting engine No. 17 as running c1921, and shows the 15-spoke unbalanced cast iron wheels. This locomotive was one of the original twenty R24 shunters, having been built in January 1891 as No. 413.

The Holden J67 & J69 (GER Class R24, R24 Rebuilt, & S56) 0-6-0T Locomotives. Following the success of James Holden's Class T18 (LNER J66), further variations were built. The Class R24 was built between 1890 and 1901, and had a 6in longer wheelbase but a 6in shorter frame. The cab was slightly smaller and the side tanks were moved further forward.

Class J69 was used for the R24 rebuilt and S56 locomotives. During the 1920s, the LNER converted 59 of the J69s to be shunting locomotives by removing the condensing gear (where fitted), and fitting lever reverse gear.

R24 class: 40 shunting engines, originally built as such, three unrebuilt passenger engines, plus two shunters rebuilt 1912 from passenger locomotives. R24R class: 95 passenger engines rebuilt with 180 lbs. boilers with longer fireboxes.

After being rebuilt with 180psi boilers, Westinghouse brakes and large side tanks, these locos, along with the identical S56 class, were classified as LNER J69/1 at the time of the Big Four grouping. This loco represents a rebuilt R24, still in GER colours, as preserved at the National Railway Museum in York.
