The GFCy focuses on how global financial conditions affect individual economies. The notion is of more recent vintage. In the 1990s, the analysis of “push” versus “pull” factors behind cross-border capital flows recognised the importance of external financial conditions (Calvo et al (1993, 1996), Fratzscher (2012)).
