The London and North Eastern Railway Gresley Classes A1 and A3 were 4-6-2 "Pacific" steam locomotives designed by Nigel Gresley for passenger work. They were initially intended for use on the Great Northern Railway (GNR), but became a standard design on the London and North Eastern Railway after the amalgamation of 1923 .

The first two A1 Pacifics were built in the twilight years of the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and entered service in 1922. The A3 was a modification of the original A1 design, and all of the surviving A1s were eventually rebuilt as A3s.

The Flying Scotsman was completed at Doncaster, at a cost of £7,944, in February 1923 as 1472, an A1 pacific-class locomotive. Under ownership of the London and North Eastern Railway Company (LNER) it was renumbered the 4472 and christened the Flying Scotsman.

2018年6月15日 · Gresley designed and built the first two members of the A1 Class while Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the Great Northern Railway (GNR). The A1s featured a 4-6-2 ‘Pacific’ wheel arrangement, the first class with this wheel arrangement on the GNR.

The first two engines appeared from Doncaster works as GNR locomotives 1470 and 1471 (later 4470 and 4471 and then BR 60113 and 60102) and they were originally classified as A1 engines. They were a logical development from the GNR Atlantics, but nevertheless caused a sensation and great interest when they arrived.
