The Gorky Museum is an architectural landmark of the "Moderne" style, the Russian term for Art Nouveau. It was built in Moscow in 1900–02 by the architect Fyodor Schechtel.

Writer Maxim Gorky's residence from 1931 to 1936, this remarkable home is a stunning example of art nouveau architecture, highlighted by a twisting marble staircase, stained glass roof and flowery mosaic and stucco decorations.

One of the city’s most enjoyable Art Nouveau creations is the Ryabushinsky House (now the Gorky House Museum). Art Nouveau hit Moscow in style, and played a full part in that astonishing period, say 1895 to 1910, when Russia moved from catch-up-and-copy to the avant garde and revolutionary thought… to revolution.

The museum-apartment of A. M. Gorky is located in the former Ryabushinsky mansion, built for the family of a young Russian entrepreneur by the famous Moscow architect F. Shekhtel. The luxurious house on Malaya Nikitskaya, in which the writer lived in the last years of his life, is a true masterpiece of architecture of the early twentieth century.

He considered one of the founders of the Socialist Realism movement in Russian literature; and the house located on Malaya Nikitskaya in Arbat, now acts as a museum of the last years of his life.

2011年5月29日 · The house is positioned on the top of a hill surrounded by pine trees. The site has three directions with beautiful views, only the north view is worse, so the architects decided to close it off.
