Through analyzing the GOSAT observational data, scientists will be able to ascertain the global distribution of carbon dioxide (CO 2) and methane (CH 4), and how the sources and sinks of these gases vary with seasons, years, and locations. These new findings will enhance scientific understanding on the causes of global warming.

The higher level data products (FTS Level 2, CAI Level 2, FTS Level 3, CAI Level 3, Level 4A, and Level 4B data products) store retrieved physical quantities such as the atmospheric concentrations of CO 2 and CH4. Data users can search and order these data products by accessing GDAS (Figure 10).

GOSAT (Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite) is an environment-monitoring satellite developed by Japan which launched on 23 January 2009 and remains operational. It is part of ESA's Third Party Missions Programme, in which ESA has an agreement with JAXA to distribute data products from the mission.

The above chart demonstrates the whole-atmosphere monthly mean concentration of methane (CH 4), calculated by using GOSAT data that reflect CH 4 levels in all layers of the atmosphere. It is also showing seasonal fluctuations and yearly rise over the analyzed period.
