
EMD GP20 - Wikipedia
The EMD GP20 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1959 and April 1962. Power was provided by an EMD 16-567D2 16- cylinder turbocharged engine which generated 2,000 horsepower (1,500 kW).

2024年12月16日 · Electro-Motive's GP20 was the builder's first turbocharged model in the General Purpose series. Interestingly, it was inspired by Union Pacific's efforts to turbocharge the 567 prime mover. It was also the first road-switcher offered with a standard low nose/hood, designed to provide crews greater forward visibility.

BNSF 3005 (GP 20) at NOPB engine yard. The first BNSF trains into New Orleans were light engines, often only about 10 cars. Dash-9's and large trains were now appearing and BNSF GP's would be a rare sight.

AT&SF rebuilt EMD GP20u 3000 built May 1960 as AT&SF GP20 1100 and seen in Chicago, IL Nov. 22, 1986. Nice shot of the 3000 showing off its early Blombergs from a traded-in FT, but the glimpse of GE B39-8 7400's hindquarters in the left background is also of interest.

The units had their one-piece windshields replaced with 2-piece standard size glass, but they are still turbocharged, and from what I've heard, the electrical system is still finicky. In the end, they didn't even call the rebuilds "GP20u," just plain GP20.

2023年11月14日 · Electro-Motive Division’s GP20 was the company’s first four-axle model to be fitted with a turbocharger, but its roots trace back to one of EMD’s customers, Union Pacific. Union Pacific began experimenting with several turbocharger models in the mid-1950s on a number of its GP9 and GP9Bs, creating the first GP20s in-house.

2022年9月7日 · Starting in the Spring of 1959, Union Pacific’s Omaha shops equipped twenty GP9s with turbochargers, ten from AiResearch and ten from Elliot. These units became known as the “Omaha GP20s” (see a great online article written by Don Strack, entitled "Omaha GP20's, Union Pacific's GP9 turbocharging program" for a complete history).
