The EMD GP7 is a four-axle (B-B) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and General Motors Diesel between October 1949 and May 1954. [2] The GP7 was the first EMD road locomotive to use a hood unit design instead of a car-body design.

Athearn has announced the release of an HO EMD GP7 and GP7B unit in the black/silver zebra paint scheme. Units are available with or without DCC and sound. According to Michael Flick, this is the first time GP7 B units have been available in the zebra stripe paint scheme.

EMD GP7Bs are rare enough- only five were built, all for Santa Fe. John Pouch shot a nice overhead of 2790A at Clovis as it was preparing to leave town on a train. EMD built only five GP7Bs and they all went to Santa Fe. During the mid-70s you could usually find one or two working as switchers at the Clovis NM yards.

Liking the performance of their EMD F units, Santa Fe wanted reliable road switchers that could provide better visibility and share components with their other EMD brethren. Between 1950 and 1953, they ordered 244 GP7’s. During the 1960’s, Santa Fe started to repaint their fleet of GP7’s into a more simplified scheme to help on paint masking costs.
