This was one feature that Thompson was at pains to get rid of, in particular by rebuilding No. 4470 “Great Northern” and the six P2s. But it was relatively trouble-free, and would have been a costly exercise to alter the Gresley engines with this gear.

Sir Nigel Gresley is probably the most famous locomotive designer associated with the LNER, and served as the LNER's Chief Mechanical Engineer for most of the LNER's life. Gresley was born on 19th June 1876, the fifth child of the rector of Netherseal (present day Derbyshire), the Reverend Nigel Gresley.
