Grebes are small to medium-large in size ranging from the least grebe (Tachybaptus dominicus), at 120 g (4.2 oz) and 23.5 cm (9.3 in), to the great grebe (Podiceps major), at 1.7 kg (3.7 lb) and 71 cm (28 in). Despite these size differences grebes are a homogenous family of waterbirds with very few or slight differences among the genera.

About one foot in length, with brown feathers, adults having a dark streak on the bill. They live year round in most of the United States. A quick glance down to the pictures on the page also shows that the Pied-billed Grebe is the only native species without the red or orange eyes.

The most widespread grebe in the New World, and the most familiar in most temperate parts of North America. Far less sociable than most grebes, almost never in flocks, sometimes found singly on small marshy ponds.
