The Grimsel Test Site (GTS) is located in the Swiss Alps and was established in 1984 as a centre for underground Research and Development (R&D) supporting a wide range of research projects on the geological disposal of radioactive waste. International partners from Europe, Asia and North America are working together at this unique facility.

The Grimsel Pass links the Hasli Valley in the Bernese Oberland with Goms in Valais. The pass road runs through a wild, sparsely grown mountainous region marked by granite rocks, reservoir lakes, and power plants.

The Grimsel pass gained international significance at the end of the 1800 s when the famous explorers Horace Bénédict de Saussure and Franz Josef Hugi chose the Grimsel as the centre of their alpine research.

The Grimsel Pass is one of the Alpine giants that rises over 2,000 metres of altitude. From Oberwald to Gletsch, the warmup is fairly easy as the slope is reasonable. A small cog railway follows the route just below the road until the split to the Furka Pass.
